How to sign up
I have shared the Lab Calendars with all
teachers. You should have received an email stating that you have access.
You should be able to open Outlook and go to the “Calendars” tab on the
LEFT SIDE. There you will find a personal calendar, called
"Calendar". You should also see at least two other calendars: 502
Lab and 504 Lab. All calendars have check boxes to the left. Check the box
to see the calendar in your main window. If you wish, uncheck boxes to make
room so you can see better. Click in the SPECIFIC
time slots you want and note what lab you are in. Don’t block off PAWS,
planning or lunch unless you are actually going to need that time. KEY NOTE: don’t select “All
Day” or others may not see your name. To block off big sections you
can grab the “Handle” at the bottom of your block and drag down.
New Teachers, before
you may sign up for using the labs you need to meet with the me for a brief
session on proper use and care of the labs. I will show you how AB Tutor,
the monitoring software, works. I will also go
over some key mistakes teachers make when signing up or using the labs.
Signing
up to use Labs
Please don't sign
up for more than 3 days in a row, or more than three consecutive weekdays (like EVERY
Wednesday in November, etc.).
Keys
for the Labs
The keys are to be
picked up and signed
out from the Media Center. They will hang on the bulletin
board immediately to the left as you enter the MC. Please be sure to sign
the keys out and in. Students
MAY NOT pick up or bring back the keys.
Lab
Use
The computer labs should be used for educational purposes-not as a
"reward" or "fun time". With limited computer
resources, it is vital that the labs be left open for projects, research, Online lessons (RiverDeep),
etc.
Substitutes
using Labs?
In general, substitutes should not
take students to Computer Labs. They are not trained to use the labs with
students. However, you may be able make an appointment for Jeff to work
with them and the sub.
Please
MONITOR students and don't let them download files and/or load AOL instant
messenger, Yahoo instant messenger, etc. They MUST refrain from changing
settings on the computer (e.g. screen savers, backgrounds, etc.). If a screensaver or desktop
background is different on one or two computers, and it was not like that
when you brought your class in, then YOUR student(s) changed it. Please
deal with this issue.
Saving
Files
Students should save files to their personal drive-also known as the G:
drive. It is IMPOTANT to have students name file with THEIR NAME and a
unique feature of the file (ex. Jeff_Faulk_bears
presentation). They should also save to the R: drive in a folder with your
name and the period they are in. Teachers should create a folder by naming
it their last name. Then it is a good idea to create sub folders for each
period. ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: All students can access
these files. My advice is to PLAN ahead and copy your folder(s) to YOUR G:
drive (While logged in as you at the Teacher Station in each lab).
Turning
Off Computers
The last class
of the day should turn off the computers. To determine if YOU are the last
class of the day, look at the correct file on the calendar. If you are
finished and not coming back, and there are no other classes coming in, you
should have the computers shut down. Make sure ALL computers shut down
before you leave. Students do not have to close the laptops before they
leave.
Logging
In-Teachers
Teachers may log in as themselves for full access to student folders and
teacher folders. Be
SURE to log off before you leave the room--You do not want to allow
students or other unauthorized persons access to the teacher folders, etc.
Check email using the OWA site—NOT Outlook. Also, be sure to LOG off of OWA
when you leave the computer.
Logging
In-Students
Students log in using their secure user name and password combination. The
initial passwords and user names are kept on the T: drive (see Jeff For
more on this).
